  IDENTITY THEFT

A major problem with identity theft is that its victims are unlikely to know a crime has been committed against them until it’s too late. That’s why I’m presenting some basic information that could help protect you and your family.

Review Your Credit Report. First, make sure there are no surprises on your report, then it is especially important to review the inquiries section, because a significant number of unknown inquiries from creditors could indicate that a thief is trying to open accounts in your name. Contact all three major credit bureaus:

Equifax (equifax.com)

TransUnion (transunion.com)

Experian (experian.com)

Watch Your Mail. Keep track of your billing cycle. If a credit card or bank statement does not arrive on time, follow up with the lender. Personally deliver sensitive outgoing mail to a secured mailbox.

Exercise Caution. Thieves may stand close by at the ATM or in checkout lines, hoping to obtain information. Your best defense is to be always well aware of your surroundings.

Protect Your Social Security Number. The USA Patriot Act requires all financial institutions to obtain your full name, date of birth, permanent street address and Social Security number. However, you can still take some precautions to protect it by limiting its exposure – that is, don’t use it as your identification or username for online or other credit card or financial accounts, and don’t carry your number around with you.
