Pieces Donated To Auction To Benefit Center For Women, Children.
Before he donated a painting to "Compassion Is a Work of Art," a benefit for St. Margaret's House in November 2006, William Jensen didn't know much about the day center for women and children in downtown South Bend.  "I had to drop off my piece down there during the day and saw firsthand what they did. I was so impressed," he says.  "It's nice to see a local charity make as much difference in the community and in women's lives."  So Jensen helped organize a much bigger event, the Artists for St. Margaret's House Gala, a black tie optional party with a catered dinner and live and silent auctions at the Woodward Banquet and Special Events Room on Saturday, April 19th.  "My job was to find the talent," he says. "I had a lot of artists willing to step up.  We wanted to try to have every artist be able to sell.   You're going to get to meet the artist.  It's almost like a private show."  Michelle Bryant, branch manager at Raymond James & Associates that hosted the first event and helped sponsor the gala, said the collection had grown from eight or ten artists to nearly thirty, with more than fifty pieces for sale.  "We've got a fabulous variety," she says.  "We wanted to make this an entire night of fun. " Raymond James' commitment to art includes a rotating local display in their office.  Works for auction are in acrylic, pastel, oil, photography, wood sculpture and ceramic, and St. Margaret's House guest Bobbie Robbins donated a handmade afghan.  Watercolors by Geneva McKenzie, a guest of St. Margaret's House, led the live auction.  "She had three pieces in the last auction, and they all sold," says St. Margaret's House director Kathy Schneider.  "We'll also have some St. Margaret's House silk scarves," handpainted products by women who have started a business with advice from University of Notre Dame students.  Other artists are Jensen, Elena David, Abigail Berger, Susie Russell, April Hallwood, Cathy McCormick, Jan Gilbert, Bruce Langton, Michelle Herrli, Mary Firtl, Barbara Rogan, Melissa Schroder, Diane Overmyer, Maria Winstin, Kay Westues, Jake Webster, Charlene Long, Jacqueline Dickey, Laura Miller, Norma Parcell, Mary Beth DiGann, Jessica Lynn, Mark Botzum, Diane Redman-Dillon and participants in the Frame of Mind Gallery in Niles.  At the first art auction for the center, the buyer of Susie Russell's impressionist landscape, "Afternoon Stroll, India," donated the painting to St. Margaret's House, where it hangs outside Schneider's office.   The painting of five women, Russell's first work after Sept. 11, 2001, appeared in the Hoosier Salon Exhibition, toured the state in a traveling exhibition and was published in "Hoosier Painters of the 21st Century."  The scene, Russell says, "represents the attributes that St. Margaret's House nurtures: strength of the individual undergirded by a sense of community."

This painting by Cathy McCormick was one of the many that was available to be bid on at the auction for St. Margaret's House.

This painting, titled "El Aro Cabl San Lucas," by Granger artist William Jensen was featured in the art auction to benefit St. Margaret's House.

St. Margaret's Fashion Show
11-16-2010
Spirit and inspiration never go out of fashion, and on Thursday they were combined with fashion at a "Surviving the Times" fashion show that was put on by the clients of St. Margaret’s House. The women of St. Margaret’s made clothes, paintings, and jewelry that guests of the event could buy."The mission of St. Margaret’s House is to improve the lives of women and children in need, by helping them with immediate needs and programming that they need to take their next best step forward," said Kathy Schneider, of St. Margaret’s House. The event gives those who have turned to St. Margaret’s House a chance to express their gratitude for the help they have received in getting through difficult times.
