Gary's family has a history of recognizing opportunities and working hard to achieve their dreams. His great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather left his home in England and moved to Lynn, Massachusetts in 1642, just 22 years after the famous pilgrims made their trip to this great country. Three hundred and nine years later, Charlie Poling (Gary’s father), at seventeen years of age, left a small coal mining town in West Virginia to join the U.S. Army and change his life, eventually working on the presidential helicopter crew for President Lyndon Johnson.
It’s that family spirit that caused Gary to leave a career with investment firms owned by large banks and establish True North Capital Group. As the owner of an independent firm, he has the ability to provide his clients with unbiased, independent advice while still having the comfort of a large firm and a team of experts supporting his clients through Raymond James Financial Services.
Gary got everything that he needed from his family: love, values and education. His family taught him that success offers an opportunity to help others, and that successful people have a responsibility to give back to their community - to help the less fortunate - especially the children, the poor and the elderly who have no choice in their circumstances. Gary and his wife Lorena have helped over 35 children volunteering as wish grantors with the Colorado Chapter of Make-A-Wish and Gary is a member of their Board of Directors. They also serve in various capacities with Brent’s Place, The Latino Community Foundation of Colorado, and Saints Peter and Paul Church. He also donates a percentage of his net advisory fees to non-profit organizations which are chosen by his clients. You can read more about this program by going to the “In Our Community” page.
Gary Poling was raised in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from New Mexico State University in 1981 and a Master of Science degree in Business Administration from the Monfort College of Business in 1983. He worked in the engineering field until 1994 when he changed careers and became a Financial Advisor. Gary is married to Lorena Davila Poling and has two children, both currently attending college. He loves deep-sea fishing, sitting on the beach, visiting Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta Mexico, barbecuing for friends, and woodworking.
Lorena was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, and is fluent in both English and Spanish. She graduated from ITESO University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a marketing specialty. Lorena’s primary focus is business development, servicing client accounts, implementing compliance requirements, implementing policies and procedures, client support, account transfers, and practice management.
She really enjoys working in her administrative role and believes that attention to people is essential.
Lorena never thought about leaving Mexico. Then she met Gary, and two years later she moved to Colorado in October of 2001, after marrying him in her home town. She became a US citizen in June, 2007 and she thinks that she is lucky to have the opportunity to be a part of two wonderful cultures.
Her parents taught her to appreciate everything in life and that everyone has a commitment to give back. “We can never give enough, but we’ll always do as much as we can” she says, which is why she and her husband Gary are working together supporting several non-profit organizations.
Her Father is a Doctor and her Mother has been involved in their family’s finances since they started their business. Lorena has one brother Jaime who is a Doctor as well, and three sisters. Linda and Karina work in the family business in Guadalajara. Ivette is married to Jon and they live in Texas.
Lorena really enjoys meeting people and learning from them, loves music, travel, dance and practices ballet, too.
Raymond James is one of the largest independent financial services firms in the United States. Since its beginning in 1962, it has always been a different kind of company – embracing long-term planning and methodical decision-making while staying uncompromisingly client focused. When other firms were simply buying and selling stocks or mutual funds, Raymond James focused on financial planning to help individuals reach their goals. It was the first firm to pioneer that concept – and today it supports its advisors with access to a full range of comprehensive resources, helping them to do the same.
- More than 5,400 financial advisors
- 2 million client accounts
- 2,400 locations (United States, Canada and abroad)
- $268 billion in client assets
- $35 billion managed by its subsidiary asset managers
Raymond James Financial was recently named the best full-service broker in the 2011 SmartMoney annual broker survey for the third time in four years – ranking above Edward Jones, Wells Fargo, UBS, Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley Smith Barney.
