American Pictures Distinguished

American Pictures Distinguished Lecture Series offers a highly origional approach to art and portraiture. This series pairs great works of art with leading figures of contemporary American culture. Each lecture features an eminent writer, critic, historian, or artist who unravels the meaning behind a single, powerful image. In the process, he or she explores how works of art reflect American identity or provide a window into our shared history. Most importantly, the series reveals how artworks inspire creative minds in many different fields. The series director is historian and essayist Adam Goodheart, who is director of the C.V. Starr Center of the Study of the American Experience at Washington College, in Chestertown, Maryland.

The Smithsonian is setting aside a certain number of seats at the lecture for Washington College. To reserve your seats, which are free, call Joan Smith at the C.V. Starr Center at 410-810-7165.

You can also sign up for a bus the Starr Center is running, courtesy of Valliant & Associates, from Washington College to the Smithsonian.  Please call Joan Smith at 410-810-7165.

Shirley Hampton Hunt

Shirley Hampton Hunt
was born in Rome, Georgia and studied art and photography at Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri. After raising her children in Montgomery County, Maryland, she moved to Baltimore, where she studied studio art at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

She resumed her photography in 1991 to document the many beautiful, but deserted homes on the Eastern Shore of Maryland after moving to the area.

Most recently, Hunt was commissioned to provide an integral part of the interior of the Baltimore-Washington International Airport; and currently resides in Chestertown, Maryland with her husband, Daniel Hunt, where she is a partner and exhibitor in The Artists’ Gallery.

Shirley is a member of The Artists' Gallery located in historic Chestertown on the Eastern Shore of Maryland along with fellow artists Sally Clark, Linda K. Hall, Bonnie Foster Howell, Jeanne Saulsbury, and Brenda Stewart. In 2003, this group of artists came together to highlight their talents in a combined gallery setting. Not only do they have a strong friendship, they enjoy a profound appreciation of each other’s work. Autographed copies of her book, The Vanishing Landscape, are available for purchase at The Artists' Gallery; or by contacting the gallery here for more information.
