Bruce Marsh, American, born 1938

Skyway with Scenes from Tampa Bay Area

Tampa artist Bruce Marsh earned his master of art degree from California State College at Long Beach in 1965. Bruce was an instructor of fine arts at St. Petersburg Junior College from 1965 through 1969 and has been on the fine arts faculty at the University of South Florida since 1969.

His work is included in numerous private and public collections, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Tampa Museum of Art and the St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Art. Marsh has done many commissioned artworks for businesses and corporations around the United States including the Florida House of Representatives, Hyatt Regency Hotels in Lexington, Ky. and Wailea, Hawaii, and IBM Corporation, Jacksonville and Boca Raton, Fla. and Atlanta, Ga.

Mr. James commissioned "Skyway with Scenes from Tampa Bay," specifically for The Raymond James Financial Center. The choice of subjects was derived from conversations between the two and was chosen specifically to convey some specific visual impressions of the Tampa Bay area including the Don CeSar Resort Hotel, Ybor City, the Tampa Convention Center, the St. Petersburg Pier, the Vinoy Hotel and the Hillsborough River.

This piece uses multiple imagery, an idea Marsh worked with in the 1960s and to which he has recently returned. Marsh describes the composition as "a variation on a checkerboard with order on the left and right, and disorder in the center. The rectangular images are scattered over a view of the mouth of the Tampa Bay."
