Virtual Art TourDuncan McClellan, American, born 1955Duncan McClellan's parents, Jennifer and Mac McClellan, are artists and craftsmen who instilled in their eight children an appreciation and love of the arts. All of their children are now artists and craftsmen working in wood, paper, porcelain, fabric and of course, glass. Duncan wrote in his artist statement, "My fascination with glass began at age five, when I visited a glass factory in West Virginia. I never forgot the image of the glowing, molten mass being formed by an expert craftsman. After successfully working with leather and clay, I finally had the opportunity to learn to blow glass at a studio in Ybor City, FL in 1987 . . . . Currently my work depicts, through the use of recognizable icons, emotions relating to family, personal growth and the spiritual connections between each of us as souls." In a 1990 interview for the Tampa Tribune, Duncan related, "It goes back to something very primitive. It's exciting. You're working with a live, dangerous material in your hand and forming what you want out of it." "I just love working with hot glass," Duncan stated in an interview for Tampa Bay/The Suncoast's Magazine. "The molten material constantly changes and challenges the artist in me. When I create with glass I must focus my complete attention to the work at hand. I find that this level of intense concentration stimulates every fiber of my being-my mind, body and spirit." Duncan has been in numerous exhibits and has won many awards and honors, including being chosen as the 1994 Poster Artist for the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce's month-long Artworks Celebration. |
