Kairos Thoughts | July 2011
Thank you. This month marks the two-year anniversary of Kairos Wealth Advisors of Raymond James and we continue to be grateful for the ways that you enrich our practice and our lives. We have long believed that our profession is less of a career than it is a calling. Nurturing your goals to fruition is what makes this calling so gratifying.
When we as a practice were envisioning the future of our services to you based on your very positive feedback in our 2011 Annual Client Survey, we recognized that an additional team member would be needed to help us continue improving to serve you better. In the months that followed, we worked on clarifying various teammates' roles and articulating ways that we believe we can enhance your client experience.
Thus, we are excited to introduce you to the newest member of our team, Troy Petry, who joined us on May 18th as a Registered Service Associate. Troy will have various client service responsibilities and, as with all of us, will be part of a collaborative approach in every client relationship. We hope that you will extend the warmness you have already bestowed upon us to Troy, and we invite you to meet him personally at our Open House on Thursday morning, June 23rd from 8:30 until 11:00. Refreshments will be served as we welcome you to Locust Lane.
Troy is a Carroll County native who earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Baltimore, then started his career with Legg Mason shortly thereafter in 1996. As a Funds Associate, Troy continued with Legg Mason until 2009, when he began working on various merger-related projects for Morgan Stanley until joining our office. Troy is Series 7 and 66 licensed. He lives in Littlestown, Pennsylvania, with his wife Tracy and their three children-Taylor, Tyler and Tanner. Troy is a member of Uniontown Bible Church and feels that his Christian faith is the center of his life. He loves to spend time with his family and is an avid Orioles fan (his patience is impressive!).
Because you welcome us into your lives to such a degree, you may be interested in an update on our personal lives:
Linda and husband John continue to enjoy the "semi-retired" phase of their lives. They just returned from visiting Nashville and Memphis with highlights being Graceland and Dollywood. Later this summer Linda will be spending a week at the Outer Banks and several days in New York helping her goddaughters celebrate their 40th birthday.
Lisa and husband Brent have put some finishing touches on their new home, adding gardens and a second pasture for their horses. Sons Tom and Mason are continuing their college educations and daughter Jamie will be entering North Carroll High School as a freshman in late August. They hope to spend some time together this summer vacationing with family on St. Martin's River in Ocean Pines.
Mike and wife Jackie Johnson have been staying active backpacking in the Rocky Mountains and in various canyon lands in the southwest. Mike's son Dave, his wife Shawna and their two sons Brayden (5) and Connor (3) are doing well in Denver, as are son Matt, his wife Chris and daughter Bexley (10 months) in Nashville. Jackie's daughter Alex lives in Washington, DC and is pursuing an acting dream via a one-year program at the Theatre Lab.
Carol and husband Steve celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary this year with a week in Ocean City. They are thrilled that in October their youngest daughter Meredith will marry her fianc, Greg. The wedding will be held in Aruba.
Alex, wife Cindy and son Charlie enjoyed the company of many friends and family members on a two week, 3,600 mile road trip in April encompassing 11 states. Charlie is loving life and enjoying the benefits of warmer weather-particularly his swing set and toddler pool. Contrary to what Mom and Dad say, Charlie is never tired!
All of us continue to appreciate your ongoing trust and friendship. May you experience all the joys of summer!
Many Blessings,
Alex, Carol, Mike, Lisa, Troy and Linda

Thank you. Amazingly, we are now past the one-year anniversary of Kairos Wealth Advisors of Raymond James & Associates. Since June 12, 2009, because of your trust, our practice has grown significantly from where it stood even prior to our team's transition to Raymond James. As we discussed with many of you, we started rebuilding our practice from scratch last June, and it is both humbling and greatly affirming that you have blessed us to such a degree.
Looking forward, we continue to seek new ways to better serve you. A substantive portion of that service involves persistently furthering our own education. Specifically, Alex has recently earned his CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM certification-the gold standard in our field. Carol has earned the niche Accredited Wealth Management AdvisorSM designation, and Lisa the Registered ParaplannerSM designation-both through the College For Financial Planning in Denver, Colorado.
The past year has marked several milestones in our personal lives, and because you share so much of yourselves with us, you may be interested in an update:
Linda and husband John recently enjoyed their first trip out West, visiting several of our country’s National Parks in celebration of their 30th wedding anniversary in July. Both have settled nicely into "semi-retirement" and are enjoying the extra time this gives them for "fun things."
Lisa and her husband Brent completed construction of a new home outside Hampstead, moving in December 2009. Their time continues to be filled with the many events of raising a family. Having graduated from North Carroll High School last month, their son Mason is eager to begin studies at the University of Maryland, College Park this August. Eldest son, Tom, is entering his junior year at McDaniel College and their daughter, Jamie, is entering 8th grade at Shiloh Middle School. Although the house won't be quite as full, Lisa and Brent will still be supporting their children by attending soccer games, wrestling matches, lacrosse games, and horse shows.
Mike and Jackie Johnson were married October 19, 2009 after finding each other on eHarmony in late 2007. They are busy melding households. Mike is selling his property near Nashville and is enjoying his first opportunity to be Dad to a daughter (Jackie's 24 year-old daughter, Alex). Mike and Jackie are keeping active with backpacking and visiting Mike's sons and daughters-in-law. Son Dave, his wife Shawna and their two sons live in Denver. Son Matt (drummer for Lady Antebellum) and wife Chris live in Nashville and are expecting a baby girl in September.
Carol and her husband Steve recently celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary with a snorkeling/beach vacation in the Dominican Republic. With summer here, they are enjoying the outdoors, especially cookouts with family and friends. As time and resources permit, they are working on long-needed home repairs and renovations, a seemingly never-ending task with an older home!
Alex and his wife Cindy continue to enjoy the rapid growth of Charlie, their son. Charlie celebrated his first birthday in June, is on the verge of walking, and has a quickly expanding vocabulary. Alex and Cindy have been privileged to take part in the capital campaign for Carroll County Youth Service Bureau, which successfully culminated this spring with a beautiful new facility at the intersection of Washington and Kate Wagner Roads in Westminster.
All of us continue to appreciate your ongoing trust and friendship. May you enjoy the remainder of your summer!
Many Blessings,
Alex, Carol, Mike, Lisa and Linda
Kairos Thoughts | January 2010
All my life, I’ve been a planner. I plan for expeditions and day hikes, funerals and weddings, projects and fun times. The planning is always done to provide for events that require advance notice or resources or carry significant potential consequences. Each plan allows for the free movement of spirit and spontaneity as befits those Kairos moments upon which we so often happen serendipitously. I think of the process as providing a shell of structure around which the creative yolk can grow to expressive maturity.
Kairos Wealth Advisors gives each of us the opportunity to continue this planning in our lives – with the emphasis on financial deadlines, resources and potentially important outcomes. We embrace this and love what we do. Flexibility is a key to planning so we always err on the side of having as many options available as possible. Life happens – in so many unexpected ways. Those moments can be more easily appreciated when the possible choices are not restricted by inflexible contract language or illiquid investments.
This past year was another lesson in the truth that “the only thing we can count on is that nothing stays the same.” If we were to catalog all the predictions of the media, economists, pundits, politicians and sooth-sayers, we would have given them very poor scores for accuracy. In my life, I gained a wonderful woman with whom to share love and adventure; her beautiful, lively daughter; a still-frisky 10 year-old dog and an imperial cat. Life is very good. I couldn’t have predicted this in a million attempts.
I have learned to try to remain in the moment as much as possible because the baggage from the past is heavy to carry and laden with what-ifs. It prevents me from actually living the only life I have – the one right in front of my nose – in this moment. The future can be planned – with flexibility and care – and we still have to live in the present because that is where the future happens to us. One of the beautiful benefits of planning for the future is that it can lessen the preoccupation and worry that interferes with enjoying the now.
I look forward to seeing all of you in 2010 and wish each of you a very Happy and Prosperous New Year!
