Women-owned businesses, defined as businesses whose ownership is at least 50% female, comprise 40% of all companies in the U.S. These businesses employ 35% more people in the U.S. than Fortune 500 companies do worldwide. From 1987 to 1999 women-owned businesses grew 103% - one and one half times the national average. Their employment levels grew 320% and their revenues grew 436%. Women entrepreneurs accounted for 70% of all new business start-ups 1990-2000. 65% of women owned businesses have made it past their 5 year anniversary compared to 58% of their male counterparts. (IBID)
