Is there a Person Named Raymond James? Many people assume that our firm was named after an individual. Actually, our company name is derived from the names of two firms that merged in 1964. The name of the company comes from a merging of companies run by Robert A. James and Edward Raymond. Raymond James was incorporated as Robert A. James Investments in 1962. In 1964 Raymond and Associates merged into Robert A. James Investments and the firm of Raymond James & Associates was formed. Raymond James Theatre Located in downtown St. Petersburg overlooking Williams Park, the new home of the American Stage Theatre Company – Raymond James Theatre – opened in May 2009. The $4 million state-of-the-art facility, built in conjunction with St. Petersburg College, hosts a variety of performing arts productions with the goal of providing the best live, professional theater experience in Tampa Bay. Raymond James has long supported American Stage through ongoing sponsorship. With this new capital commitment, the firm continued that support and helped bring the theater company’s dream of a new home to fruition. In naming the Raymond James Theatre, the firm is proud to display its dedication to the arts in St. Petersburg and beyond, as well as its commitment to giving back to the community that has supported its growth. In addition, the company hopes its actions will help encourage others – corporations and individuals – to support not only live theatre, but all forms of artistic expression. In 1998 Raymond James entered into an agreement to name the brand new 70,000 seat Tampa stadium, Raymond James Stadium®. In 2006, the company extended that agreement until 2015. The “crown jewel” of the National Football League, Raymond James Stadium® is the home of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the University of South Florida Bulls football and the New Year’s Day Outback Bowl, as well as concerts and special events. It was also the host of Super Bowl XXXV on January 28, 2001 and Super Bowl XLIII on February 1, 2009. A survey of players by the NFL Players Association in 2006 rated Raymond James Stadium as the best NFL playing field. For more information go to www.raymondjamesstadium.com.
The Tom and Mary James/Raymond James Financial Art Collection, one of Florida’s largest private art collections, consists of over 1,800 works of art. It includes original paintings, sculptures, and graphics. More than 90% of the collection is owned by Tom James, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Raymond James Financial, and his wife Mary. The collection is on display at the firm’s corporate headquarters in St. Petersburg, Florida. The art is placed on different floors of each campus building according to style and theme. Mr. James has selected almost every piece of artwork himself. While some of the artists in the collection are now deceased, he believes buying works from living artists helps to sustain them in their profession. Although the collection began in the late 1950s with predominately American artists, primarily from Florida, it has grown to include works by such artists as Alfredo Arreguin, Alexander Calder, Mihail Chemiakin, Salvador Dali, Jacob Lawrence, Roy Lichtenstein, Joan Miro, Leonardo Nierman, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Andy Warhol, Jamie Wyeth and Victor Vasarely, among others. In the mid 1980s, while on trips to Colorado and New Mexico, Mr. James began to collect Western and Southwestern art. At the present time, more than half of the collection consists of Western/Southwestern styles of art, including works by Roy Anderson, Earl Biss, J. D. Challenger, Glenna Goodacre, Allen Houser, Frank McCarthy, Dave McGary, Dan Namingha and Ray Swanson. The James family, as well as Raymond James Financial, has long been a supporter of the arts. This year, for the eleventh consecutive year, Raymond James Financial will be the major sponsor for the renowned Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of Arts. In addition, Mr. James is currently president of the Salvador Dali Museum Board of Directors. The Tom and Mary James/Raymond James Financial Art Collection is not open to the public. However, those who wish to view the collection may request a tour by calling Emily Shrider at 727-567-1363. While we cannot guarantee that all requests will be honored, a minimum of at least one week notice is necessary to schedule a tour. For those who love art and cannot visit our campus, selected works are displayed on this site, along with information about the artists. Raymond James Community Involvement Charitable Giving Raymond James Financial sets aside a percentage of profits for charitable purposes. A major portion of this reserve is used to match home office and branch office employees’ United Way gifts, up to $5,000 per person, in communities across the country. This practice has made the firm a top corporate sponsor of the United Way of Tampa Bay and has helped impact social services organizations through the United States. The firm is also significantly involved with other charitable organizations, with specific focus on education and the arts. Education Through programs such as Junior Achievement, the Florida Council on Economic Education’s Stock Market Game and the Partnership to Advance School Success, a program of the Florida Council of 100 that brings business experience into schools, Raymond James helps develop young people into the corporate leaders of tomorrow. The Arts A deep appreciation for the arts permeates Raymond James’ culture and is reflected at the firm’s corporate headquarters, where more than 1,800 works of art – most owned by Raymond James Chairman Tom James and his wife Mary – are displayed. In addition to sponsoring several art shows each year, the firm is also a major supporter of The Florida Orchestra, and is committed to ensuring that creative expression remains a central part of the Tampa Bay landscape. Other Raymond James also provides support to social service organizations, such as disaster relief groups and those who provide services for the disabled and disadvantaged or help abused children. In addition, the firm leverages its relationship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to support communities across the country, most notably through its “Kicking for Kids” program which donates funds to children’s hospitals in cities where the Buccaneers play. |
