In January of 2017 Dean was awarded the Sagmore of the Wabash from the State of Indiana and Governor Mike Pence. This honor is the highest distinction given by the Governor of Indiana for distinguished service in Indiana.

The highest distinction in Indiana is the designation of Sagamore of the Wabash by the state governor, an award created by Governor Ralph Gates (1945-1949). “Sagamore” was a term used by Native American tribes of Indiana to describe a lesser chief or a great man among the tribe whom the chief consulted for wisdom and advice. This award recognizes citizens by their humanity in living, loyalty in friendship, wisdom in council, and inspiration in leadership.
