Alex. Brown Hires Advisors in Los Angeles, Expands Institutional Consulting Team
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Alex. Brown, a division of Raymond James, continues growth in the West with the recruitment of an investment management group led by Jon DuPrau and Caspar Tudor from J.P. Morgan Securities in Los Angeles, according to John Sutton, Metropolitan Regional Director for Alex. Brown. DuPrau will lead institutional consulting efforts in Southern California and will serve as one of the 17 advisors who make up the Institutional Consulting business at Alex. Brown. The distinguished group within Alex. Brown works with a wide range of endowments, foundations, healthcare, pension and defined contribution plans with consulting assets totaling over $7 billion.
“We are excited to welcome Jon and Caspar to the team, as we continue to build on recruiting momentum in the Los Angeles market. Their years of experience in successfully managing their client relationships and their unique approach to client portfolios is a perfect fit to the boutique wealth management business we are building at Alex. Brown,” said Gary Cohen, Regional Executive and Branch Manager in Los Angeles.
DuPrau, Managing Director at Alex. Brown, brings 18 years of industry experience to the team, having started as a Quantum Portfolio Manager for Prudential Securities and having studied technology’s effects on the capital markets exclusively throughout his career. He was instrumental in developing a quantitative, rules-based process that has been applied to various indices. The innovative system scores, screens, sorts and selects what DuPrau believes are the most attractive stocks within any given index and purchases those in separate account strategies, which are rebalanced quarterly, in an effort to outperform the reference index. Often referred to as dynamic indexing, the strategy has become popular with foundations and endowments. DuPrau is looking forward to exploring formulas and planning portfolio construction strategies for international markets and indices.
Tudor, Vice President, Investments, works on the team’s formulas for the Russell 1000 and 2000 indices and is enthusiastic about being able to offer these strategies to private client and institutional investors. “The depth of this division’s consulting resources and experience is impressive, and I’m thrilled to be joining the team here in Los Angeles. The freedom, technology and advisor support are unparalleled.”
“When I analyzed the efficiency and low costs of these strategies, I knew Alex. Brown’s open architecture and institutional consulting capabilities and Raymond James’ platform would be an ideal fit for the team,” continued Cohen. “We’re proud to offer flexibility and support to our advisors as they provide comprehensive and unique solutions to their clients.”
Also recently joining the team is Peter Barry. Since 1991, Barry has worked with both institutional and high-net-worth individuals. His institutional investment background provides a valuable perspective when assisting clients in the development and implementation of an investment portfolio and wealth management. Barry also brings 25-plus years of experience with a wide range of alternative investment strategies and prior experience as a portfolio manager at a large New York family office. Barry said of his new firm, “Alex. Brown’s offerings through their Private Institutional Client business is among the best in the industry.”
The team is strengthened by Maria Lee, Senior Registered Client Associate; Iris Lee, Director of Portfolio Consulting in Los Angeles; and several senior leaders and supporting analysts of Alex. Brown’s Institutional Consulting business.
