The art of connecting: Making contact using LinkedIn

Three simple ideas for making a person-to-person connection after “meeting” on LinkedIn.

Once you make the connection online through LinkedIn, you may decide it’s time to make an offline connection. Making that person-to-person connection can be done in a number of ways, but here are three simple ideas to consider:

You can approach this person at a social/networking event and invite him or her to meet you for lunch, at your office or somewhere they prefer. If bumping into that person at a social event is unlikely, you can invite him or her to meet through your initial LinkedIn connect message.

If your original connection was a week or two earlier, consider extending an invitation to meet via email or a direct phone call.

Once your meeting is set, get prepared for it. Thoroughly study your potential recruit’s profiles, not just on LinkedIn but on other social media websites, too. The more information you have the better. The key is to have enough information to break the ice and casually start a conversation, yet remain informal so you can build a foundation for your relationship.
