The P-Myth: Taking back your destiny

Showing up and working hard may not be enough for progress.

I suspect many of you have heard of, or read about, one of the E-Myth books by Michael Gerber. Did you know there was a P-Myth also? It’s the myth of progress, where simply having everyone show up and work hard every day must result in progress for your practice. Sure, showing up and hard work is important, but they’re not enough.

Progress can only happen when you have determined a destination and scheduled the time to get there. Otherwise “the whirlwind” of your day-to-day tasks, obstacles, victories and setbacks will eat up every minute of your day, leaving you sweating on a treadmill, going nowhere. This is why it’s so important to do some kind of business or strategic planning each year.

We’re not talking about defining the 30-year aspirations of your practice. We’re talking about taking some time to figure out where you are and where you want to go over the next 12 months. Are there any threats you need to respond to, weaknesses you need to overcome or opportunities you really should be taking advantage of? What goals do you want to shoot for? If you aren’t aiming at anything, you don’t go anywhere.

Some of you may have done this in the past with little to show for it. This was almost certainly due to the whirlwind. There are ways to keep this from happening though. Make sure your goals are spelled out in action plans with steps, due dates and specific assignments delegated to someone who will ensure they are completed. Accountability is critical. Having some sort of regularly scheduled accountability meetings will boost your probability of goal completion by 90% over just having an action plan.
