Tyler Thompson

J. Tyler Thompson,

CFP®, AAMS®, WMS® Financial Advisor

Tyler Thompson is the founder of Capitas Advisory Group and a trusted advisor to individuals and families navigating complex business, estate, financial decisions. His mission is to help clients intentionally plan for the “work optional” lifestyle they’ve envisioned—by bringing clarity, structure, and confidence to every stage of their financial lives, specifically at major life transitions.

As a Certified Financial Planner and Certified Exit Planning Advisor, Tyler works closely with business owners and high net worth families approaching pivotal moments such as business growth, liquidity events, succession planning, or legacy planning decisions. Tyler often serves as the quarterback through a client’s exit, coordinating with attorneys, CPAs, investment bankers, and other specialists to ensure nothing is overlooked. His role extends well beyond the transaction—after an exit, Tyler becomes the family’s personal CFO, overseeing investment strategy, cash flow, tax-aware planning, philanthropy, and multigenerational considerations with a long-term perspective.

While an exit is inevitable, Tyler believes a successful exit requires years of thoughtful preparation. His planning process is detailed, proactive, and deeply personal—designed to align wealth decisions with each client’s values, family priorities, and definition of success.

Clients value Tyler’s engaging, relatable style and his unwavering commitment to putting their interests first. For him, the true reward is helping people gain clarity, pursue lifelong goals, give generously, and build lives that reflect purpose, specifically after their transition out of their business.

Tyler earned a bachelor’s in business management, currently pursuing his MBA from the University of Georgia, and joined Raymond James in 2017. Before that, he served his country as a soldier in the Army. While serving, he attended some of the Army’s most prestigious schools including Ranger School, Airborne School, Combat Lifesaver Course, Level 3 Combat Water Survival Course, and SWAT School, and achieved Soldier of the Year in 2014* at Co H 121 Long Range Surveillance ABN INF. From his time in the military, Tyler brings a hard-charging, high-level work ethic and high-performing mindset. He strives to exemplify the Ranger creed every day.

Tyler believes in giving something back. He regularly speaks at firm-wide conferences concerning his specialty in the Exit Planning and Investment Banking space. He stays active in his local and veteran community and has served on veteran focused nonprofit advisory boards. He is also active at Dogwood Church in Tyrone, where he serves in various capacities.

A lifelong Georgia resident, Tyler lives in the Atlanta area with his wife, Rachel, and their four children—Charlie Kate, Addison, Cole, and Caroline. Outside of work, he enjoys fly fishing, hunting, sporting clays, golf, and endurance sports, including the Tactical Games and other shooting competitions.

When Tyler envisions his own work optional future, he plans to:

  • Play golf in Scotland
  • Hike the Appalachian Trail
  • Climb Mount Aconcagua
