Ken Ciani has been offering financial consulting services to businesses and individuals for the past 18 years. He is Branch Manager of Ciani Thomas Financial, a full-service financial consulting practice. Although independent, Ken is affiliated with Raymond James Financial Services, Inc., where he has been a registered investment advisor representative since 2001.
Ken began his career as an accountant* with the State Industrial Accident Board, where he served the last six years of his employment as chief accountant and budget director. After leaving state employment he entered the banking industry and served as a commercial real estate loan officer with First Republic Bank (now Bank of America). Ken found that his accounting and commercial banking experience would serve him well in corporate America and left banking to become chief financial officer and vice president of Schlotzsky’s, a quick-service sandwich franchisor, and later CFO and vice president of Austin Sonics, Inc. – owner/operator of 94 Sonic drive-ins in Central Texas. His restructuring of the Austin Sonics organization and capital structure were key factors in the company’s growth from 54 to 98 stores, with sales increasing from $54 million to over $98 million in just four years. Before going into private practice, Ken honed his financial analytical skills during the banking crisis that followed the Tax Reform Act of 1986, working as a portfolio manager and a member of the due diligence team of Ontra, Inc., during the early 1990s. During his time at Ontra, Ken was responsible for analyzing and evaluating prospective loan portfolios of distressed financial assets considered for joint venture acquisition with such major financial institutions as Citicorp, GE Capital and Transamerica Insurance Company.
A fourth generation Austinite, Ken is active in the community, having served on the board of CASA of Travis County and St. Edward’s University’s Advisory Board to the School of Business. Ken is a founding member and former vice president of the Central Texas Fellowship of Catholic Men, Inc., and was a member of the national leadership team of “That Man is You,” a Catholic parish-based men’s fellowship program that is rapidly spreading across the country. He also served as a member of the investment committee for the Catholic Diocese of Austin from 2009 to 2015. He was an adjunct faculty member of St. Edward’s University for four years, teaching courses in international finance, money & banking, and financial accounting. Ken received a BA degree in finance from Southwest Texas State University (Texas State University) and has been a Certified Public Accountant since 1991. He and his wife have been married for 39 years and have two grown children, Matthew and Mark.
