John and his team help busy professionals and retirees focus on what matters most to them. We educate clients through comprehensive financial planning and help them pull together all the pieces of their financial lives. We build trusting relationships by communicating proactively and responding to client needs. John believes having confidence that you are on track to accomplish your goals is more important than trying to beat some benchmark index. As a result, John helps manage cash flow and select investments that match clients’ goals, time horizon, and willingness to tolerate portfolio fluctuations. John earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business and economics from Lehigh University and a Master of Public Administration degree from Northeastern University. After a successful career as a U.S. Army officer, John and his family settled in Charlottesville, Virginia.

John has more than 15 years of financial planning and investment management experience. Prior to cofounding Dean & Masloff in 2008, John worked for an independent financial planning firm and a brokerage firm in Charlottesville. He completed the College for Financial Planning CFP® Certification Professional Education Program in 2003 and earned the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification. He is a member of the American Association of Individual Investors, the Financial Planning Association, and the Financial Services Institute.

John and his wife, Lois, live in Albemarle County. They have two adult children, Katie and Matt. John and Lois are members of Grace Community Church. They enjoy hiking, skiing, and traveling. John also enjoys flyfishing and riding his BMW motorcycle.
