Medicare introduces cards with unique, protected numbers.

From April 2018 to April 2019, Medicare will be replacing all Medicare cards in an effort to fight against identity theft and fraud. The new Medicare cards will have a unique 11-digit Medicare number, replacing the use of your Social Security number to provide you with greater identity protection.

New Cards

Your new card will automatically come to you, and your coverage and benefits will remain the same. Once it arrives, destroy your old Medicare card and begin using the new one right away. If you’re in a Medicare Advantage Plan (like an HMO or PPO), you will continue to use your Medicare Advantage Plan ID card as your main card but should keep your new Medicare card on hand as well.

Need More Information?

Additional information about your new Medicare card can be found at If you receive a request – whether by mail, over the phone or otherwise – for information or money, or if you are told your health benefits will be canceled if you don’t share your personal information, please call 1.800.MEDICARE (1.800.633.4227).
