In 1847, Nina’s great-great grandfather, T.W. Fisher, built a Greek Revival home on the family estate in Bowdoinham, Maine. This lovely gift for his new bride became known as “Keewaydin Farm,” which is the Micmac term for “where the West winds blow.” It was here on the family homestead that Nina (pronounced Nine-ah), grew up with her sister and two brothers.
She attended Brunswick High School and was active in the liberal religious youth organization. She also played clarinet in the band and worked every summer on the farm.
Nina met the handsome, blue-eyed Peter James Mendall while they attended Bates College. They married in the summer of 1964. Nina graduated from the University of Maine, Orono in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a minor in English.
Over the next 14 years, Nina, Peter, daughter Kim and son, Peter L., spent three years in Alaska. The rest of the time Nina and Peter were teachers on North Haven, Maine (a lovely island off the coast of Rockland). In 1980, the family moved back to the mainland from North Haven and by 1981, Nina had joined her father-in-law, George Mendall, in the brokerage business.
Nina has a funny story about the early days in the financial business. She had driven to Boston to train at the bond desk. It was early April but a fierce blizzard was in progress. The moment the young Nina arrived at the Boston office, the two bond traders thrust a manual into her hands, gave her a few good phone numbers and told her to do the best she could – they were leaving for home while the roads were still open. Since her hotel was nearby she was to man the bond desk for all New England for the next day and a half while the regular crew rode out the snow squall at their homes!
Nina has two children, five grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. In her semi-retirement she enjoys her grandchildren, quilting, reading, bridge, teaching bridge, gardening and teaching sewing to newcomers (non-English speakers) in Lewiston each week.
