Derek is proud to be a third generation Financial Advisor, carrying on a tradition that started with his grandfather, Virgil Smith, in 1957. Derek began working with his uncle, Marty Smith, in 2006 after graduating from Bradley University with a Bachelor of Science in business economics. Derek shares the same passion for helping people as Virgil and Marty and works hard to continue to earn the trust of his clients.

Derek participated in the 60th Leadership Rockford program through the Chamber of Commerce and was elected by his peers to serve as a moderator for the 61st class. In 2016 he was recognized by the Rockford Chamber of Commerce as one of 40 Leaders Under Forty. Derek is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional.

Derek and his wife Laura love being parents to their sons, Emmitt and Calvin. Laura graduated from Illinois State University with a Master’s Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders, and is currently a Speech-Language Pathologist in the Rockton School District.
