The Olympic Spirit in All of Us

I’ve loved watching the Olympics since I was a kid, but the older I get, the more meaningful they become. These athletes are extraordinary—not just because of what they accomplish on competition day, but because of what it takes to get there. We see the finish lines, the medals, the celebrations. What we don’t see are the early mornings, the setbacks, the doubt, and the relentless commitment required just to qualify for the Games. That unseen work is where the real story lives.

Most of us will never compete at an Olympic level, yet we share the same inner qualities as those athletes: drive, heart, passion, intelligence, and the courage to keep moving forward. Life knocks every one of us down at some point—sometimes hard. What defines us isn’t the fall, it’s the decision to rise again. That resilience is part of who we are. It’s how we’re wired. We see countless examples of everyday people showing extraordinary strength day in and day out.

So, as you watch these athletes—newly crowned national and international heroes—remember this: heroism isn’t reserved for podiums. It shows up in perseverance, in quiet determination, and in choosing to move forward when things are difficult. There are heroes everywhere, including back home.

Three Things to Focus on This Month:

1) Read a book.
Not for work. Not for productivity. Read to expand your perspective or simply to enjoy a good story. I’m continuing my journey of revisiting classic novels I somehow missed along the way. Mark Twain once said, “A classic is a book which people praise and don’t read.” I’m changing that—one book at a time. The Time Machine is currently on my nightstand.

2) Move and stretch your body.
Every day. For the rest of your life. Movement builds strength, energy, and clarity—physically and mentally. Walk, run, bike, lift, hike, stretch. Find what you enjoy and make it a habit. Take care of the only body you’ll ever have.

3) Watch the Olympics.
Especially the sports you never see anywhere else. Ski Mountaineering anyone? And if the Olympics aren’t your thing, Opening Day for baseball is right around the corner!

Finally, don’t just survive this winter—thrive in it. Get outside. Breathe the fresh air. Go make some snow angels. This season, like all seasons, is temporary. What lasts is how we show up while we’re in it.

Best Regards,

Gabor
