Before establishing Nevada Family Wealth, an independent practice aligned with Raymond James in Reno, Nevada, in 2012, Jim was a financial advisor at Edward Jones for 12 years. He is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner who earned his CFP® certification in 2007.
Prior to pursuing his career as a financial advisor, Jim taught high school English and served as an assistant football coach in Las Vegas. This experience taught him that listening is as important as the ability to teach. Jim graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education in 1998.
Jim wakes up each morning with the goal of making a positive difference in his clients’ lives. He is steadfast in his belief that financial planning makes a difference. Growing up, his family was very blessed to have an outstanding insurance agent who insisted that his parents carry an umbrella liability insurance policy even though they really didn’t see the immediate need. They accepted his recommendation based on trust built over years of doing business together.
On July 4, 1993, Jim’s parents were involved in a horrific car crash while on vacation in California. The accident resulted in significant damages, both personally and financially. The umbrella liability policy protected his parents from personal bankruptcy. It also ensured that Jim’s college plans would not be altered. Jim strives to build trusted client relationships just like his parent’s insurance agent. He believes by doing this he will be able to continue to pay it forward with his clients every day.
As an Eagle Scout, Jim understands the value of serving in the community. He sits on the boards of the Estate Planning Council of Northern Nevada and Washoe Little League. Jim is the current president of the Estate Planning Council of Northern Nevada.
Jim received RGJ Media and Reno-Tahoe Young Professionals Network’s Twenty Under 40 Award in 2012.*
Jim and his wife, Erin, enjoy traveling and sharing unique experiences with their two children, Avery and Carter.
