What is the most daring thing you have done?
When I turned 40, I took my first solo trip. I was inspired to do this by a few of our female clients whose independence, curiosity, and love of travel sent them traveling all over the world. I went to Bar Harbor, Maine and spent a week hiking in nearby Acacia National Park. I used this alone time to take a break from my normal, somewhat chaotic, life and to reflect on the past, ponder the future, and, of course, to enjoy my present experience. This spurred a love of solo travel and since then, I have done several solo trips which have taken me many places including; Zion National Park, New York City, Belize, and several countries in Europe. Most recently, I hiked part of the Camino de Santiago.
What is your proudest accomplishment?
When I was offered a partnership in my previous firm, I decided it was important for me to have a CFP® designation. This designation makes you uniquely qualified to help individuals pull all their finances together, solve financial problems, and make a plan to achieve their financial goals. It is a two-year program that can be done through a course or by self-study. I opted for the latter. The program, at the time, was broken down into five sections: Retirement Planning, Tax Planning, Estate Planning, Investment Planning, and the Financial Planning Process. At the end of each section was a two-hour exam and in order to pass the final test, you had to take a 2-day, comprehensive exam. I was working full time, and my son was three when I started my studies. Thanks to a supportive husband and by being disciplined, focused, and studying hard, I completed my studies and passed the exam within 2 years.
What is your favorite trip or adventure that you’ve been on?
It’s a 3-way tie: 1. My niece lives in Spain, previously in Barcelona and currently in San Sabastian. Anytime we visit, she is an amazing tour guide because she is a “local”. 2. My son, Jake, is studying abroad in Germany completing his graduate work in cognitive neuroscience and philosophy. My husband and I visit him 1 or 2 times a year and he always creates interesting itineraries. 3. Our family took a trip to Austria and Switzerland with a dear friend who had been hiking in this area for over 10 years. The hikes were incredible and the huts at the tops of the trails were lovely. Common theme of my favorite trips: they were all lead by guides who were very familiar with the areas lending itself to being treated as locals vs tourists.
What are your specific goals for clients?
I want every client to be able to have financial clarity and confidence. I want to help them understand their current situation, identify their goals, and then determine a path to get them where they want to go. I am surprised by how many people do not have clarity on these issues. I enjoy helping people explore and identify goals that are most important to them and then build a plan to achieve these goals. It is a living, breathing plan that must be revisited periodically. Doing this can allow you to thrive today while having the confidence that you can achieve your vision of tomorrow.
