About The Book

The purpose of this book is to help long-term investors make smart, reasonable financial decisions. We define a long-term investor as anyone who will not have a need for investment principal within the next five years. Most savers are long-term investors, whether they know it or not. Maybe you’re planning on retiring this year. Maybe you retired 15 years ago. Then again, maybe you are 85 years old. Do any of these situations preclude you from being a long-term investor? Absolutely not. To the contrary, the more time you spend in retirement, i.e., the greater your longevity, the longer you need the use of your investments to sustain your lifestyle. Furthermore, the goal of leaving money to future generations also makes you a long-term investor, and it probably means allocating a larger portion of your portfolio to stock than you might have imagined.

If any of the above causes you anxiety, don’t worry—you are not alone. We wrote this book to help you overcome your fear and change your mindset by altering your behavior. In the following pages, we hope we can dispel most of your fears about long-term investing and help you feel more comfortable about your financial situation going forward.
