Timothy Chen

Over the past 17 years as an advisor, Tim has helped clients navigate many market cycles and world events that ripple through portfolios. He believes that personal financial consequences are another indication of how interconnected our world is. He builds strong relationships, celebrating milestones in life alongside each client, from weddings and births to graduations and retirement celebrations.

The first thing you will notice about him is his compassionate, client-first approach to financial planning. He joined Charted Course Wealth Management of Raymond James in 2019, drawn by how well the group aligned with his bedrock values and long-term perspective. Before that, he served as an advisor with Morgan Stanley for five years and Wells Fargo Advisors and its predecessor firms for 12 years.

Born in Taiwan, Tim spent his childhood in Guam and has called San Diego home for the past 25-plus years. He studied philosophy at San Diego State University and mechanical engineering at University of California at San Diego. He is dedicated to making a difference in his community, volunteering his time at local schools as a coordinator of Math Olympiads and a Chinese New Year program. For the past decade, he has volunteered at the Taiwanese American Community Center’s monthly investment meetings, and was a 2016 honoree of Rancho Bernardo Hats Off to Volunteers.

He lives in San Diego with his wife, Edna Ng-Chen, whom he met in second grade. They have two sons, Ethan and Ewan, and a rescue dog, Elsa. Tim’s hobbies include keeping up with the ever-changing interests of his sons and Elsa, who has helped him achieve his goal of 10,000 steps a day since her adoption.
