Derek started working at Raymond James Financial in 2007 within their Asset Management Group. Through the development of the department he eventually served as Vice President, Senior Asset Management Consultant for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. In this capacity he was responsible for consulting with the firm’s Financial Advisors and making recommendations by providing detailed investment information and advice that may have impacted their client assets, such as changes to portfolio allocations, managers or capital market assumptions. Additionally he would represent the conduit of resources in the home office for finals presentations to endowments and foundations, at client meetings and events, and would frequently present ideas on how to solve their financial issues to the +500 advisors he covered at Private Client Group conferences.
Outside of his time at Raymond James he worked as a Trader at a long-short equity hedge fund located in Orlando, FL. Through this role he was responsible for idea generation for potential investments, monitoring portfolio holdings, and executing trades. Additionally, he worked with the CEO and Portfolio Manager on writing commentary that was delivered to subscribers on a weekly time frame. This commentary revolved around portfolio performance, outlook, and current fund positioning.
Building a foundation of industry knowledge Derek has pursued several designations which include becoming a Certified Financial Planner™, an Accredited Investment Fiduciary, and designations from the Investment & Wealth Institute (formerly IMCA) including the Certified Investment Management Analyst® (CIMA®) at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania, and Certified Private Wealth Advisor® an advanced credential created specifically for wealth managers who work with high-net-worth individuals, focusing on the life cycle of wealth. Derek graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from the University of Central Florida where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity serving in several roles including Vice President.
When not focusing on the financial services industry Derek is passionate about running having completed five marathons (including Boston and Marine Corps), and can often be seen at local races in the Tampa Bay area. For the past several years he has worked with the UCF Alumni Chapter of Tampa Bay in several roles including a term as President. Becoming a Father in early 2019, Derek enjoys spending time with his wife Meghan and daughters, Emelia “Piper” and Peyton, embracing all of the Dad duties that come with a young family.
