Everyone needs a ‘Bucket List’ of places to see and experience. The San Antonio River Walk has always been near the top of my list. A long weekend get-away filled my need to visit this Texas ‘City of Missions’.

The famous miles-long River Walk follows the San Antonio River as it meanders through the downtown area. The lush walking paths are lined with Cypress trees, restaurants, hotels, and shops. We took advantage of an early arrival to catch a ride on a riverboat cruise and listen to the history. A morning ride is quiet and cool – we were informed that the nightlife cruises are for the more adventurous which might include interaction with the bar scene crowd.

Famous River Walk

Not far from the River Walk is the most famous museum in the state of Texas. The Alamo, an 18th-century Spanish mission preserved as a museum, marks an infamous 1836 battle for Texan independence from Mexico. While the size of The Alamo is far from impressive, the history and preservation is worthy of a visit. Not far from the center of town is the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, preserving four more Spanish frontier missions. These outposts were established 300 years ago by Catholic religious orders to spread Christianity among the local natives.

Pearl District was a favorite find for us. Pearl started with preserving the historic brewery buildings and has grown to include eateries, hotels, condominiums, a Culinary Arts school, and fun retail shopping. Hotel Emma is a real jewel of a destination, which is a converted 19th century Brewhouse full of delightful surprises.

There are plenty of attractions in or near the city to appeal to all travelers. We opted for a 70-mile drive to visit the town of Fredericksburg. The quaint shopping, wineries and restaurants were a draw for us. The city's German heritage is on display at museums and churches. The vast National Museum of the Pacific War located here is enjoying a major renewal that may require a return visit!
