With the holiday season around the corner and time often spent around family, it got us thinking! I recently had a conversation with some clients of ours, Jack and Jill, which reminded me that we play a vital role in your financial portfolio, yes, but we also play a role in your goals, wishes and plans for your next generation. Sometimes, we get tangled up in determining what is most important (markets, performance, investment research). Every once in a while, we need that gentle reminder to come back to the family, the legacy, and the continuation of the wealth you have worked so diligently to create. This thought of what comes next, what lies beyond you and how you have built something for the next generation is effectively a ripple of you.
Jack and Jill understood how we were supporting them in their goals for both themselves and their next generation. It isn’t just about performance and a comparison against the stock market. This meeting was both a review and a strategy session.
During our conversation, Jack and Jill asked some really important questions:
While I know the answers (us!), I stepped back to remember that we shouldn’t be waiting until you are gone to establish a relationship with your beneficiaries. We are able and willing to meet them now, which enables us to start building the trust they will need to work with us in the future.
Inheritance comes at a stressful time in a person’s life. Handling the intricacies of an inheritance will be much less stressful if there is an existing relationship with us. The information is much less overwhelming if your beneficiary already has a base level of knowledge of some of those choices to make and the rules which guide them.
Looking across the table at Jack and Jill, clients who understood the bigger picture of our partnership, I was reminded that just because we here at FLWP know all the ways we support our clients, their families and their transfer of wealth, doesn’t mean all our clients do.
So here I want to capture in writing, that we are deeply committed to helping you and your next generation. We are here to meet them, educate them and guide them as they become responsible for caring for the wealth you have created, tended and nurtured.
I also thank you for these conversational reminders about the bigger picture. They bring us back to our center so we can focus on supporting you and your family. We care for your wealth the best way we know how - as if it were our own.
