One of the fund companies I work with provided me a booklet earlier this year which includes a calendar of special days for 2017.  A few special days that are coming up require comment.

On Sunday, June 18 our country celebrates Father’s Day.  As I remind my girls, “you wouldn’t be here without me.”  Another fun and peculiar fact about June 18: this year it will be “National Go Fishing Day”.  I will celebrate Father’s Day by calling my three daughters and checking in on them.  I plan on celebrating the latter occasion for a full week, starting next Saturday, if that is okay with you.

The second recognition day that deserves mentioning is June 21st, National Selfie Day.  Quite obviously, this amusing recognition of a recent phenomenon is likely to be embraced by the younger generation more than older generations.  The word “Selfie” made it into the Oxford Dictionary as “word of the year” in 2013.  A funny quote on the word selfie in the Urban Dictionary: “Selfie is the beginning of the end of intelligent civilization.”  Whatever happened to asking a passerby to take a picture of you, or you and your friends, at a momentous occasion or memorable location?  Maybe the quote contains more than a kernel of truth.

I hope you have an opportunity to honor your father in an appropriate way on Sunday.  I encourage you to go fishing if you get a chance also.  And next week, if you take a picture of yourself, send me a copy via email.  I love to get picture of clients doing fun things – I recently came across a photo in my desk of a client celebrating her 90th birthday!

Finally, for next month you can look forward to celebrating: National Ice Cream Month, Beans & Bacon Week (July 1-5), The Tour de France (July 1-23), Shark Awareness Day (July 14th), Hammock Day (July 22), and my wife’s favorite on July 7th, National Chocolate Day.

Enjoy!
