Gregory Smith
Gregory S. Smith, CFP®, ChFC®, CPWA® CTFA Managing Director Senior Financial Planner

Greg devotes most of his time to working directly with our clients, updating and reviewing their financial plans to ensure each knows where they stand relative to their goals. He strives to make financial planning sessions enjoyable and memorable through his thoughtfulness, care, concern, curiosity, warmth and humor.

He is one of three managing partners and a founding member of The Wise Investor Group. He is responsible for forming and developing the team’s financial planning process.

With a master’s degree in both financial planning and psychology, Greg’s philosophy is that the best financial planners have the mind of a capitalist and the heart of a social worker. “I like solving problems, identifying unique and beneficial strategies, helping people, and making a difference in their lives. I found financial services to be the perfect professional fit,” Greg says.

Greg helps clients make decisions, such as when they should apply for Social Security benefits, when and if Roth IRA conversions should be considered, and how much should be distributed out of inherited IRA accounts to take advantage of a lower tax bracket.

Greg takes pride in educating clients on important financial and investment matters. He enjoys answering questions along the lines of, “How long will my money last?” and “When will I be financially independent?”

In his effort to best serve clients, Greg also collaborates with their other professional advisors such as their CPAs, tax preparers, estate planning attorneys and insurance professionals. He likes to consider strategies that may lead to having more overall assets, less taxation, greater control, smoother asset transfers and better approaches to being charitable.

Greg holds several professional credentials that help him serve the specific and complex needs of his clients. He is a Certified Financial Planner professional, Certified Private Wealth Advisor®, Chartered Financial Consultant® and Certified Trust and Fiduciary Advisor.

Before Greg transitioned to Raymond James with the team in September 2022, he served as a senior financial planner with The Wise Investor Group at Prudential Securities; Ferris, Baker Watts; and most recently at Baird, where he was also a managing director.

Greg earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Arizona and a master’s degree in psychology from George Mason University. He also holds a certificate in financial planning from the Florida Institute of Technology’s Virginia campus and a master’s degree in financial planning from the College for Financial Planning.

Greg has served as a long-time mentor in the National Capital Area chapter of the Financial Planning Association. He also serves on the ethics committee of the Investments & Wealth Institute.

Greg is originally from Phoenix, Arizona, moved to Virginia in 1994 and today lives in Great Falls, Virginia, with his wife, Jodi. They have four children: Taylor, Theodore, Millie and Matthew.

In his free time, Greg enjoys running, working out, singing and playing the piano, spending time with his wife and four children and hearing about their day. He also really enjoys traveling domestically and abroad, attending professional conferences, learning and sharing new ideas, trying new restaurants and watching his favorite professional and college teams compete.
